Working together for a drug free community

Church News

Dear Faith Community,

The Drug Free Alton Coalition would like to take a moment to recognize you for the positive impact you have on countless individuals, families, and the community as a whole! In fact, past self-report surveys conducted with youth 10-17 in the Alton and Godfrey areas indicated that churches were amongst the top protective factors in their lives, helping them to make healthy and positive choices!

Our mission is reducing underage drinking and substance abuse, particularly among youth. We primarily serve those who work or reside in the communities of Alton and Godfrey. We realize if we are to have a positive impact on the complex issue of addiction that knows no bounds and touches nearly everyone regardless of social-economic status, race/ethnicity, or education level; we must engage in strategies that are comprehensive, innovative, and that meet people where they are. Moreover, we must support people and help them deal with their "feelings". as this is one of the top reasons people start using alcohol and other drugs. Sadly, according to the Illinois Youth Survey (IYS 2016), 58% of 10th graders in Madison County alone have reported feeling hopeless for more than 2 weeks straight and 22% of them have seriously considered suicide.

With that being said, we have so much appreciation for all that you do each and every day. According to the same survey tool (Madison County. IYS 2016), 39% of 8th grade students, 30% of 10th grade students, and 25% 12th grade students participate in a church or faith-based youth group. That's nearly 5,200 students in Madison County alone! Of course, we understand that youth groups are only one small way in which you serve and protect youth through your ministry. Drug Free Alton simply seeks to thank you for being a unique and important protective factor for the youth in the communities we serve. We recognize you have given your lives to serve all people and as a result, our communities and our world are better! We humbly thank you for:

  • Praying for us daily
  • Studying God's Word and communicating and demonstrating throughout the community
  • Modeling grace, love and patience
  • Your countless hours spent with youth and families in our communities
