DFA Job Descriptions

Coalition Chairperson

The Drug Free Alton Coalition Chairperson is an active coalition member who seeks to act in a leadership role.  The Coalition Chairperson participates at both the monthly executive meeting and regular coalition meeting. 

General duties: 

  • Chairs both monthly scheduled coalition meetings (3rd Thursday of each month) and executive meetings (1st Thursday of each month) according to the accepted rules of order
  • Assists the Coalition Coordinator with the development of meeting agendas
  • Ensures that Executive Committee members and Coalition Committee Chairpersons are aware and fulfill their responsibilities
  • Ensures that structures and procedures are in place for effective recruitment and retention of coalition members
  • Assists with recruitment of coalition members
  • Assists coalition leaders with planning for sustainability
  • Serves as a voting member of the coalition
  • Ensures that the Drug Free Alton Coalition maintains a positive and productive relationship with the identified 12 community sectors.

Coalition Chairperson should be:

  • Knowledgeable of Drug Free Alton’s mission and yearly action plan
  • Able to communicate in a short concise manner, Drug Free Alton’s mission to interested community members
  • Knowledgeable about how alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use impact other important community issues such as:  crime, violence, and bullying.

Coalition Immediate Past Chairperson 

The Drug Free Alton Coalition Immediate Past Chairperson is an active coalition member who seeks to continue in an advisory capacity.  The Coalition Immediate Past Chairperson acts in an advisory capacity to the active Chairperson.

General duties:  

  • Ensure the coalition is engaging regular maintenance activities
  • Maintain communication with the coalition paid staff and chairperson
  • Monitor committee activities
  • Monitor overall progress of coalition activities to ensure goals are being met
  • Assist paid staff with ensuring the coalition is following the Strategic Prevention Framework process
  • Assist the executive board with ensuring processes in place maximize the coalition’s ability to recruit and retain coalition members
  • Set annual meeting (to review by-laws, processes, timelines)
  • Attendance at a minimum of 2 coalition meetings annually, with strong emphasis on continuing communication with staff and officers

Coalition Immediate Past Chairperson should be:

  • Knowledgeable of Drug Free Alton’s mission and yearly action plan
  • Able to communicate in a short concise manner, Drug Free Alton’s mission to interested community members
  • Knowledgeable about how alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use impact other important community issues such as:  crime, violence, and bullying
  • Should have held the Chairperson role in the past

Coalition Secretary

The Drug Free Alton Coalition Secretary is an active coalition member who seeks to act in a leadership role.  The Coalition Secretary is responsible for recording meeting minutes at monthly coalition meetings. 

General duties: 

  • Attend monthly coalition meetings (3rd Thursday of each month) and executive meetings (1st Thursday of each month)
  • Take minutes at monthly meetings
  • Provide meeting minutes to the coalition Coordinator and Chairperson 2 weeks prior to the next months meeting
  • Maintain a current DFA membership roster (including contact information and meeting attendance)

Coalition Secretary should be: 

  • Knowledgeable of Drug Free Alton’s mission and yearly action plan
  • Able to communicate in a short concise manner, Drug Free Alton’s mission to interested community members
  • Knowledgeable about how alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use impact other important community issues such as:  crime, violence, and bullying.

Coalition Vice Chairperson

The Drug Free Alton Coalition Vice Chairperson is an active coalition member who seeks to act in a leadership role.  The Coalition Vice Chairperson presides over both the monthly executive meeting and regular coalition meeting in the absence of the Coalition Chairperson. 

General duties: 

  • In absence of the Coalition Chairperson, chairs both monthly scheduled coalition meetings (3rd Thursday of each month) and executive meetings (1st Thursday of each month) according to the accepted rules of order.
  • Provides input on meeting agenda content
  • Assists the Coalition Chairperson in ensuring that Executive Committee members and Coalition Sub-committee Chairpersons are aware and fulfill their responsibilities
  • Assists the Coalition Chairperson in ensuring that structures and procedures are in place for effective recruitment and retention of coalition members
  • Assists with recruitment of coalition members
  • Assists coalition leaders with planning for sustainability
  • Serves as a voting member of the coalition
  • Ensures that the Drug Free Alton Coalition maintains a positive and productive relationship with the identified 12 community sectors.
