Parenting Across Cultures

Children should be born with a handbook, but luckily, parents who reside in the Alton community now have access to a FREE Parent Training Program that gives them proven, effective, parenting strategies and techniques. For parents of children age 3-18

12- three hour sessions cover five curriculum components and provide parents with the information needed to change destructive behavior, along with specific alternatives to their current discipline techniques.  This program will assist parents in creating guidelines for teaching respectful behavior and to enhance parent’s ability to respond in an effective manner.

The five components include the following:

  2. Enhancing Relationships
    Contributing Factors to Behavior
    Unique Characteristics / Temperament
    Power/Control
    Developing Empathy

    Solution Building Tools
    Managing Conflict

  3. Positive Discipline
    Clear Instructions
    Consequences and Behavior Charting
    Praise
    Ignore/Praise and First/Then
    Incentives
    Confrontations
    Time Out

  4. Rites of Passage
    Personal/Spiritual
    Physical/Mental
    Emotional
    Economic
    Social
    Policitcal

  5. Community Involvement
    Family and Community Violence
    Contributing Factors to Violence
    Community Vision
    Making Connections
    People as Resources
    Commit to a Plan of Action

All components are used to assist parents and children in developing strong cultural values, a positive Parent-Child relationship and life skills necessary for succeeding in today’s society. Anger Management and Positive Discipline are the main vehicle used to foster high self-esteem, self-discipline and social competence.

Each session is facilitated by a trained instructor who will use modeling, role play, lecture, discussion and parent follow up activities.
