Alton High School Power of Peers

This is group was formed in 2006-07 school year to address the needs of young people in the Alton/Godfrey area. The focus of this peer leadership group is to reduce usage of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs among minors.
The members of Power of Peers must possess these qualities:
- high degree of maturity and emotional stability
- high degree of leadership and sound judgment
- high degree of cooperative spirit to work well as a member of a team
- the ability to organize well, work with details, and exhibit follow through
- an interest in personal and professional growth and the desire to seek supervision and knowledge to assist in this process
- a commitment to the cause and purpose of community service
- the knowledge, experience, and training to function as a useful and productive member or the demonstrated potential of such
- an agreement to demonstrate healthy lifestyle choices
Accomplishments to date:
- Red Ribbon Week Activities
- Giving out drug free promotional items at football and basketball games
- Educating peers during lunch hours with alcohol, tobacco, and drug quizzes
- Prom Week Activities
- Mentoring middle school students
- Pennies for Patients collection for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
- Peer Leadership Training
- Participation in the Madison County Youth Forum
- Writing of a Community Action Plan
Upcoming Events:
- Anti-drug media campaign in collaboration with Chestnut Health Systems
- Summer events
- Teaching anti-drug lessons at the middle school
